Best Fiction Book
Since I read primarily fiction, I feel that this category is similar to picking my favourite book of the year. Which is really hard for me and is something I've pretty much avoided doing in previous years' recaps. When listing the books I've read and loved in 2018, I came up with ten so a… Continue reading Best Fiction Book
Best Non-Fiction Book
My reading list is definitely dominated by fiction. I'd go so far as to say that I'm fairly selective about what non-fiction I read. This seems to be reflected in this category because although I only read 15 non-fiction books in 2018, four of them are highlighted below. The non-fiction I read this year was… Continue reading Best Non-Fiction Book
Best Book Published in 2018
Hey there! Welcome to the next installment of The First Annual Karissa Reads Books Literary Awards. One of the things I like about books and reading them is that there are always more. Always something new to read! Always something new and exciting being published! I used to keep a list of books I wanted… Continue reading Best Book Published in 2018
Best Canadian Book
Initially, when I put together my (almost entirely arbitrary) categories for the First Annual Karissa Reads Books Literary Awards, I called this category Best Book From a Canadian Author. But as I looked over the titles I had nominated I realized that a lot of them were showing up in other categories and that Warlight and Washington Black were… Continue reading Best Canadian Book
Best Book From an Author I’ve Read Before
Today's category is the opposite of yesterday's. These are books from authors I've read and (obviously) enjoyed previously and so searched out further writing from them. Honourable Mention: Lila- Marilynne Robinson (Harper Collins, 2014) Rules of Civility - Amor Towles (Penguin Books, 2011) Indian Horse - Richard Wagamese (Douglas & McIntyre, 2012) Washington Black - Esi Edugyan (Patrick… Continue reading Best Book From an Author I’ve Read Before
Best Book From a New-to-Me Author
Welcome to the next instalment of Karissa Reads Books 2018 Literary Awards! Today's category covers authors with an established body of work (ie: more than one published book) but someone I've never read before. Basically, if I read a book and promptly added that author's complete works to my To Read list, they get a… Continue reading Best Book From a New-to-Me Author
What I Read – August 2018
READ: The Boat Who Wouldn't Float - Farley Mowat (McClelland & Stewart, 1974) Farley Mowat is a difficult author to categorize because he covers such a wide variety of topics. This book was pure fun - a bit of adventure and lots of humour. A perfect book to take along on our island camping trip at… Continue reading What I Read – August 2018
What I Read – July 2018
It's been a great month for books around here! Often the summer is a slower reading time for me but this year I've been able to read more than ever. I even managed to read two books while on holiday at the beginning of the month - something I haven't accomplished since before I had… Continue reading What I Read – July 2018
What I Read – June 2018
READ: Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng (Penguin Press, 2017) This book wasn't at all what I expected but it was so much better. Such a compelling read and Ng nails so much of what is wonderful and terrifying about motherhood. Highly recommended. Our Animal Hearts - Dania Tomlinson (Anchor Canada, 2018) Full review here. The Silmarillion -… Continue reading What I Read – June 2018
