2026 Highlights: January

Quite often, January looks mostly like the above photo. It’s grey, it’s rainy, the days are short. It’s a month that seems to last forever. We started out a little like that, with days where it felt like the sun never fully rose before it was dark again. But rather than a month that dragged on and on, this January has passed quite quickly. Here we are at the end of it already. The simple difference is that it’s actually been quite a dry month with a lot of snow. It’s been cold, hovering around 0 for the last few days but since it feels like the rest of North America is blanketed in snow, I certainly can’t complain about a little frost.

It hasn’t been the easiest month. The news is awful and it’s heartbreaking to watch what’s going on in America right now. I’m both horrified by our neighbours and proud of the Americans I see standing up against evil. The big news in Canada has been Carney’s speech at Davos and a sentiment I’ve heard more than once is essentially, “Thank God we have a grown up in charge around here.”

We recently had a full-on week for our own family, with all the usual busy-ness, some extra plans, and then some added difficulties thrown in. We were thankful to get to the end of last week.

Yet, as ever, there are beautiful moments. Good books, music playing in the background, candles lit. Chocolate cookies, dinner with friends. Laughter and a safe, cozy home.

A birthday celebration for a good friend

Sometimes it rains and sometimes the sun shines.

Pearl has set a goal of reading 100 books in 2026.

  1. Yes, the news has been very bleak this month. Carney’s speech has had a lot of airtime here too. I think we are collectively both impressed and jealous. But celebrating the good moments is still important (maybe now especially) and I always enjoy how you do that in these posts. And I wish Pearl success with reading 100 books this year – I hope she finds some new favourites!

    1. I feel that Carney is a case of the right man at the right time. And that doesn’t always line up so I’m thankful it did now.

Pearl is at 10 books so she’s beating me right now!

    1. It is really nice! I haven’t had great luck with plants in that window and I say it’s because it doesn’t get enough direct sunlight but I think I am actually the problem.

    1. It’s kind of northwest. We have some aloe there now that’s doing ok but probably needs to be repotted and a vine-y plant. But herbs never seem to do well there.
