2025 Highlights: Spring Break

In a different world, we might have spent Spring Break in California. We’d gone so far as getting our girls passports in order and looking at flights to Los Angeles. But between wildfires and politics, we decided to stay closer to home this year and so we took 2 mini vacations in familiar spots.

Spring Break kicked off for Peter and I on the first weekend when we attended a wedding here on the Coast. Peter was the MC for the wedding and I hung out with a lot of teachers. We got dressed up and forget to have anybody take a picture of us.

Mid-week we headed up to Whistler, a place that’s seen us for several Spring Breaks before. We ate yummy food, watched Jeopardy and The Price is Right on TV, went snowshoeing, and to the local pool.

We had some lovely snowfall our first morning there but not a lot of snow on the ground and mostly rain during the day. Nonetheless, we had a great snowshoe adventure and lots of fun as a family.

We came home for the weekend and I got a night away with a few friends. This is something a group of us have tried to do for the past few years. We stay here on the Coast but we get away for a night and it’s really lovely. We stay up way too late, drink some wine, sit in a hot tub, and get to really catch up.

Early the next week, Peter and the girls and I headed to Vancouver. My family was all out of town so we stayed at their house, which felt a little funny but it was nice to have a place to stay in the city. Again, it was pretty rainy. We’d had the idea of taking the girls skiing on one of the local mountains (much cheaper than Whistler) but the conditions weren’t great. So we ate more good food, found playgrounds to enjoy, and watched Paddington on Netflix at my parents’ house.

Instead of skiing, we drove out to Abbotsford and visited a magical place called Castle Fun Park. This is basically a big indoor arcade with a shooting range, batting cages, and mini golf. When Peter and I lived in Chilliwack, years ago, we went there for my 26th birthday and the girls had seen pictures of it. So when we told them that’s where we were going, they were very excited. Their experience with arcade or video games is very minimal so Castle Fun Park seemed pretty amazing.

This was also our kids’ first time playing mini golf. (We don’t have a course here on the Coast.) It was super fun and we will definitely be searching out mini golf courses in our future adventures.

At the end of the week, Peter got a night away with his brother and then before we knew it, it was time for back to school. All together, it might not have been the most exotic Spring Break, but we added to our family memories and had some lovely times together. We are in a very sweet spot with our kids where it’s much easier to travel together than when they were little and it’s genuinely fun to go on these little adventures together.

  1. My Nick doesn’ttravel very well, so I totally understand the value of doing those closer to home type of vacations. Then, when it’s all over and you’re ready to go back home, it’s not a massive journey to get there.

    1. Because we live in a ferry-reliant community, sometimes going anywhere off Coast feels like a big deal! But these types of mini vacations really fill my travel cup and give us that break from real life! I am feeling like we’re ready to do some bigger trips as a family so we’re starting to dream for next year!
