2021 Highlights: Some Weeks in October

Life has felt busy and a little chaotic these past two weeks and, as sometimes needs to happen, I’ve let the blog slip to the wayside. Doing my best to catch up once more and so put out a little update on our lives. There is always a balance I try to find between sharing honestly (ie: not trying to make my life look like something it isn’t) and respecting the privacy of our family and those around us.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the might hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:6-7

Humility is something I’ve been praying for a lot lately. That rather than the desire to be proven right or seen as wise in my interactions with others, that I would be able to express love and be humble to follow God’s leading over my life. This fall has been a steep learning curve for me in such things but there is also so much good around us and so much to celebrate and honour.

One of our kids has a recurring sickness that we’ve been dealing with in cycles for a while now. (I’m going to be a bit intentionally vague here.) It follows a very predictable pattern and when it happens there is not a lot we can do about it. Each episode culminates in vomiting so you can imagine that it’s unpleasant all around. She had an episode about a week ago and then another one a few days ago. I always pray over my kids when they are sick but my usual prayer in these episodes is for strength to get through it and that it doesn’t last too long. This time I felt strongly compelled to pray that she didn’t throw up at all. I sent a quick text out to a group chat with some friends and got immediate responses that they were each praying (pretty impressive in and of itself because they are each busy moms!) The sick kid had fallen asleep so I let her rest and kept praying. To be clear, in previous episodes, 100% of the time, after a nap like this one, she would wake up and vomit. Every single time. This time she didn’t. She woke up and told me she felt better. She ate and we continued on with our day. Praise God. Will the next episode go this way? I have no idea but I’m so thankful that she got a reprieve that day.

This weekend we had a pretty epic storm. We had the chance to go for a walk along the waterfront as the wind picked up but before the rain hit and got to see some exciting waves and get pretty blown around! Our power was out for several hours but we spent most of that time at my in-laws’ with visiting family. (They live near the hospital so rarely lose their power.) The power was still out when we got home and we read stories and got ready for bed at candlelight with extra blankets for everyone. As I sat down to do my evening Bible reading with the lights off, I read this verse:

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

How’s that as a Bible passage for a power out? I do rather enjoy a brief power out and the calm it can bring. That said, I was glad that the power came back on before Peter and I went to bed and although today is windy and rainy again, our electricity seems to be holding steady.

I’ll be catching up on reviews this week and hope to get at least two posted soon(ish). Hope your week is going well and you are warm and dry and safe wherever you are!

  1. Karissa, I hope you are doing well and that your daughter is still feeling well when you read this comment. Reoccurring sicknesses are always frightening because, at least in my case, my tendency is to think, “Why me?”

    1. Thank you. It is all pretty mild in the long run and she will hopefully grow out of it but it is hard and frustrating when she’s going through it.

  2. That’s a great Bible passage for a power outage! I quite like a power cut too, as long as they aren’t too frequent or too long. Thanks for sharing this with us – glad your daughter is doing better at the moment.
