What I Read: March 2024

Read:

The Future – Catherine Leroux (Biblioasis, 2020) (translated from the French by Susan Ouriou)

The Double Life of Benson Yu – Kevin Chong (Simon & Schuster Audio, 2023)

Games & Rituals – Katherine Heiny (Penguin Audio, 2023)

Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit – Nadine Sander-Green (Anansi, 2024)

The Other Valley – Scott Alexander Howard (Scribner Canada, 2024)

Did Not Finish:

A People’s Tragedy – Orlando Figes (quit at 250 pages)

I actually really enjoyed what I read of this massive tome on the Russian Revolution. I’ve read a fair bit of Russian literature and I’ve studied enough of European history that I had a decent grounding going into this book. The sheer details Figes gets into are impressive and the book is nearly 900 pages long. I simply didn’t have the time or the brain capacity to give this book the attention it deserved and it came due at the library.

Currently Reading:

Kingdom, Grace, Judgement – Robert Farrar Capon

Unearthing – Kyo Maclear

2024 Reading Goals:

Goliath Challenge: 3, 979 pages read/30, 000 (1, 602 in March)

Goliath Books Read: 0 (1 abandoned)

Translated Works: 3/15 (The Future, translated from French)

Books I Already Own: 1/30 (none in March)

Pre-2023 TBR: 1/25 (none in March)

Thoughts:

I’ll admit, I kind of gave up on really reading over Spring Break and instead let myself just pick up a few things here and there and didn’t read with a lot of focus. I returned A People’s Tragedy last week and felt a sense of freedom as soon as I dropped it off at the library. I also didn’t spend as much time with audiobooks since I wasn’t on my own much over spring break. Highlight of the month was definitely The Other Valley, which I’ll be reviewing soon.

What’s Next:

Last month I said I was going to start catching up on ARCs but I only read one in March so I have a few to get through that I’d like to tackle. I’m also trying to read a few of the authors that will be at our local Writers Festival this summer. Kyo Maclear is the first author I’m reading and then next will be Naomi Klein and Sam George.

  1. I know what you mean by not finishing a book that you don’t hate. I was reading a graphic memoir about playing soccer and Title IX (guaranteeing women the right to play sports in the U.S.), but about halfway through, I was like, that’s okay, I don’t need to read this anymore.
