Looking back over my photos for May, I am surprised by how long this month was! Not in a bad way, simply that some of these happenings feel like they happened a long time ago.
May has been the beginning of beach season around here.

As well as the season of beautiful, blooming things around our house:

I got a weekend away, which meant 2 ferry rides all by myself!

Peter and the girls attended our local Father-Daughter dance where they ate burgers, danced, and hung out with friends.

We celebrated Mothers Day with our traditional annual fish & chips lunch from Sharkey’s, this year followed by some tidepool exploration in Robert Creek.

Winnie’s had some good explorations too.

We’ve recently been doing a lot of work on our house – cleaning and some repairs, as well as having replaced our old fridge and dishwasher. After struggling to remove some old drawings from windows, and lacking the recommended rubbing alcohol, we made good use of an old bottle of liqueur that is not our preferred flavour. It was very effective!

Tell me something that’s growing in your garden right now!
Well, it’s winter here so not much is growing. We’ve had loads of rain (very welcome) so the ground is boggy.
This past week has been rather rainy here too, which is also welcome because we had a fairly dry winter and are already into level 2 water restrictions.
It sounds like you’ve had a lovely month! I don’t actually have a garden, but there are a few pots on my balcony – strawberries, a lemon tree, some nasturtiums, and a beautiful shrub rose called Little White Pet! Nothing has bloomed yet, but I’m hoping it will soon. I did have some cherry tomatoes in a hanging basket as well, but we had such a big storm last week that they came crashing down and I’m still waiting to see if they have survived their tumble!
I love a good balcony garden! Do you actually get lemons growing on your tree?
It’s quite a new tree – it was a gift last March and when it arrived it had two tiny lemons on it, which eventually grew to be about 4cm or so in diameter. This year it hasn’t bloomed at all so I won’t be getting any fruit off of it – it came indoors over winter and I think maybe it didn’t get enough light. But it still looks beautiful!
How lovely to be given a tree!
Weeds! I’m very proud of my weeds – I suspect someday they may take over the world! Ha, there was a fashion for Pernod when I was just old enough to drink alcohol legally. It seemed very sophisticated back then… 😉
This Pernod may very well be from back when this was the fashion! I can tell the bottle was brought over from somewhere else as there’s no French on the label. It seems wasteful to pour it out but I don’t enjoy the flavour at all and it’s hard to mask, even when mixed with other things.
Drawings on windows? What does that mean. I’m so curious! My garden already did the irises and daffodils, which are both now done for the year. Next up are the lilies. I’m also trying to propagate some of these plants in a new garden in an effort to “re-wild” to lawn, or “un-lawn” the lawn.
I bought them these window markers which are supposed to be used on glass. I bought them for a road trip but they’ve used them at home too. And they work on the glass but they don’t come off very easily at all! Hence the Pernod! Our irises and daffodils have come and gone too. The roses and rhododendrons are blooming nicely now and last year we planted a whole bed of lavender that is absolutely thriving and full of bees!
