As any parent of school-aged children knows, June is busy. So I won’t bore you with the details. We had a solid couple of weeks in there where we had a lot going on but don’t have much in the way of photos to show you. I worked several extra days to cover a colleague’s time off and we got a lot of work done around our house.
This is how my children like to play video games together, I guess.
We got some good outdoor time in with some beach swims, paddle boarding, and a few walks.
I had some days off extra time/energy and was able to welcome the girls home with after school charcuterie board snacks.
Peter and a friend did a big hike he’s been wanting to accomplish and the girls and I spent the morning at the farmers market
At the end of the month, once school let out, we booked a last minute hotel in Vancouver near English Bay and got away for 2 nights. We mostly walked around and ate food and it was great. We managed to meet up with my brother and his wife for a meal too. We were staying in the West End and while we weren’t there while any of the World Cup games were taking place in Vancouver, we were there when Canada beat South Africa to go on to the next stage. Before I would have said I could care less about FIFA and the World Cup but it was actually really fun to be in the city that weekend. Lots of good energy and people out and about celebrating.

For pretty much the entirety of my life, summer is the time during which everything practically comes to a standstill. There’s no school, and I spent so much of my life in the academic setting. Nick and I don’t really travel, so there’s that. Thus, it always surprises me when people say that they’re extra busy in the summer. Also, all those childrens at summer activities, like sports and after school activities, are done.
I don’t necessarily feel busier in the summer but it’s a different pace. There’s often a lot we want to accomplish during the summer months and time can feel limited. We’re a tourist town so my work gets a lot busier during the summer.
Oh, I didn’t realize you live in a tourist town! That sounds interesting. I get the idea because I grew up in a college town with a state university and 25,000 students, so summers were DEAD.
Our population definitely balloons in the summer! I don’t necessarily mind because it means there is a lot going on and it’s kind of fun to get to live somewhere where other people come on vacation. But those first weekends in autumn after the tourists leave are pretty nice too!
